The “Voyage Around My Home” route is inspired by Xavier Maistre’s book “Voyage Around My Room”. In the book, Maistre asks the following question: If one is under house arrest, what else can he do but travel with the mind? His witty, humorous account is a message of sweet misanthropy for the present-day Europe of balconies as the only escape route from contemplation of the same four walls.

Taking the book as a starting point, we invite you to accompany us on a journey through the Santutxu district of Bilbao, one of Europe’s most densely-populated quarters, built to provide the housing that was needed for the thousands who flocked in from many different places to work in the city’s emerging industry or its nearby mines. A little piece of the city replete with housing blocks of different kinds, defining lifestyle models and forming the basis for relationships with others and with the world outside.
